2019 Music Celebration

“Come Hear North Carolina” at The Arts Place this 2019 as we celebrate the “Year of Music”.

Come Hear NC is a promotional campaign of the North Carolina Department of Natural & Cultural Resources and the North Carolina Arts Council designed to celebrate North Carolinians’ groundbreaking contributions to many of America’s most important musical genres — blues, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, funk, rock and everything in-between.

The Stokes County Arts Council kicks off the local celebration with a series of five concerts over the first five months of the year to celebrate Stokes County native musicians and those with close ties to the state.

 January 12, 2019 –  The Malpass Brothers

The Malpass Brothers are famed for their music steeped in the legacy of the Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, Sr. & others. Count on classic, real country. Count on a couple of old-time traditional gospels. Count on their probably coming down into the house at intermission and asking what you’d like to hear. Count on giggles and ribbing between brothers, along with daddy on the bass, some big, high man hair, and maybe an Elvis twitch or two.

February 9, 2019 – Caleb Caudle

Caleb Caudle is a local singer songwriter who was raised on rock n roll and Southern hospitality. Influenced by bands like The Clash and Velvet Underground, Caudle was playing North Carolinas punk rock circuit by the age of 15. Naturally, his music matured with his age and he became more lyrically driven, adopting a love for collecting vinyl. In 2012, he decided to quit his day job and focus solely on music — six years and four albums later, Caudle is gaining the traction he deserves. He was recently dubbed the musical equivalent of high-proof bourbon rich in flavor, with a subtle, satisfying bite, by Rolling Stone editors for their list of 10 New Country Artists You Need To Know..

April 26, 2019 – Leigh Nash

Leigh Nash is perhaps best known as the pixie-like singer with the heavenly voice from Sixpence None the Richer, a group that enjoyed considerable fame in 1999 with the single “Kiss Me.” These days  she has returned to her roots a little, which consist of Christian and country music, though she remains in touch with her pop influences. Nash’s original musical inspiration came from classic country heroines Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Tanya Tucker — whose songs she used to learn on guitar long before the Sixpence days. With motherhood as an inspiration, she recorded Blue on Blue and moved back to Nashville to join Movement Nashville, a collective of musicians geared toward expelling the myth that Nashville’s music scene consists only of country and Christian music.

May 19, 2019 – Suzy Bogguss

One of the most acclaimed female country singers of the late ’80s and ’90s, Suzy Bogguss is one of country music’s most pristine and evocative vocalists. With the release of her 1989 major label debut, Somewhere Between, Suzy quickly became one of the key artists that defined those golden days of ’90s country. She scored a string of Top 10 singles with country radio staples like “Outbound Plane,” “Drive South,” “Hey Cinderella,” “Letting Go” and “Aces,” and her 1991 album of that name was certified platinum. Suzy has released albums ranging from modern swing music with Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel; to original jazz music to  collection  classics originally performed by Merle Haggard in her most recent album, Lucky.
