“Me, My Selfie & I” at The Arts Place of Stokes
Can today’s young people separate their digital lives from their real lives? Where do the two intersect–and what does this mean as they mature into tomorrow’s adults? These are the themes explored in “Me, My Selfie & I,” a one-act “dramedy” presented Saturday May 12th at the Arts Place of Stokes.
Eight local kids (Lee Bodenhamer, Emily Cox, Riley Culler, Kaylee DiJohn, Olina Johnson, Kristin Sands, Ava Shick and Caroline Wagoner) perform a series of monologues and short scenes about the “selfie life.” They find themselves in a variety of situations, both comedic and serious: Do you “selfie” on the first date? Do you ignore the homeless man asking for help so you can “selfie” with your cone of ice cream? Does being “unfollowed” online mean the friendship is over forever? Do pictures on your phone constitute works of art?
“Me, My Selfie & I” was written by Jonathan Dorf for YouthPLAYS, a Los Angeles-based publisher of theatrical works for young people. The Stokes County Arts Council production is directed by Brack Llewellyn, co-founder of The NoneSuch Playmakers, a Surry County-based theatre company.
“This play is a bit more serious than some of our previous productions with the Stokes County kids,” Llewellyn said. “There are some light moments, but some intense scenes as well. If anyone you know is ‘addicted’ to their phone, this play will give you food for thought.”
The Stokes County production of “Me, My Selfie & I” is the North Carolina premiere of the play.
