For over ten years, the Winter Dessert Theatre Series has brought the best of theatre to venues throughout Stokes County. Desserts are provided by local businesses at each show, which are included in the ticket price. Friday, January 18, 2019 – “The Tortoise and the Hare” performed by the Columbia Marionette Theatre

The race is on! The speedy Hare is confident that he can beat the slowly Tortoise in a race across the forest. But as this classic Aesop’s Fable has taught us for thousands of years… “Slow and Steady wins the race”. The Tortoise has a few tricks up his shell, and he won’t give up so easily! Columbia Marionette Theatre uses short-strung marionettes, and a wide variety of creative rod puppets to bring this wonderful story to life.

May 24, 1961 Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans – and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave few. Mobs bloodily assaulted many. Others were arrested shining a light on a brutal, segregated South.
Breach of Peace is based on true accounts of surviving participants of the Freedom Rides as well as many other individuals involved in the early struggle for African-American equality. This solo-play is a living monument to those remarkable young men and women of various races, religions and backgrounds who rose to face the dangers of fighting for just and equal treatment for all.

“Flights of Imagination” is a trip back in time – to a time when flying was a pleasure and passengers and crew were friends. Terri Ingalls who was part of that fun-filled life and shares it with us in this one-woman show. From 1966 through 1969, she was a flight attendant with Piedmont Airlines – the small but now legendary carrier that was absorbed by US Air in 1989. Pilots, passengers, emergency landings, Saint Bernard puppies, proposals of marriage, and a touch of airline history are all woven together with skill and laughter. She reminds us that flying used to be fun – especially if you were you young and it was the 1960s.

Fried Chicken billionaire Henry Cabot Henhouse III is stabbed at his own birthday party! But who done it? Was it the fanatical environmentalist? The unbalanced animal rights activist? Henhouse’s former business partner? The embittered corporate mascot? The billionaire’s own daughter? Or – SOMEONE ELSE? With the audience’s help, a convenient amateur sleuth conducts an intense “henvestigation” to find the killer. Silly? Yes. Over the top? Of course. Fun? You bet your beak!
